Gophers Wrap Day One of Cliff Keen Invitational

Three wrestlers still alive as they look to advance to placement round tomorrow morning

LAS VEGAS - Minnesota closed out day one of the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., as three Gophers are still alive on the consolation side as they look to place in tomorrow's competition.

Minnesota kicked off the day with a solid performance in the opening session as they pushed three into the Friday evening quarterfinals, with Jake Gliva, Jake Bergeland, and Michael Blockhus all advancing.

After having a first round bye, Jake Gliva's first and only competition of the morning session was against No. 20 Job Greenwood of Wyoming. Gliva controlled the match early and often as he secured a takedowns in each of the first two periods of the bout, before displaying some solid collar-tie defense in the third period to hold his ranked opponent scoreless in the 5-0 victory.

Jake Bergeland rattled off two dominant performances in the first two rounds, pinning Sacred Heart's Jordan Carlucci before rolling to a major decision against Angelo Martinoni of CSU-Bakersfield.

Michael Blockhus earned a tech fall in his first round opponent against Princeton's Josh Breeding, then he advanced through the second round as an injury marred a clash between conference foes as he took on Michigan's Kanen Storr.

Michial Foy also advanced to the Friday evening session in the consolation round, going 2-1 on the morning after falling to No. 7 Patrick Brucki (Michigan) in the second round. Cael Carlson, Jared Krattiger, and Keaton Kluever were all eliminated from the tournament after Session I.

In Session II, the Gophers went winless as all three Gopher quarterfinalists fell to the top seeds in their brackets on the winners side, while Michial Foy dropped a tight 1-0 contest in his consolation bout.

Action continues tomorrow morning at 11:00am CT live on FloWrestling as the consolation rounds roll on. Fifth and seventh place matches will be contested at the end of Session III, while third place bouts will take place in Session IV at 5:00pm CT should the Gophers advance to that point.
