After opening the 2020-21 season by earning one point in the Big Ten Conference standings with a 0-0 draw against Nebraska, the Gopher Soccer team hits the road this week. Minnesota will travel to Michigan for a Feb. 25 contest against the Wolverines before trekking to Michigan State for a March 1 tilt this Monday.
SERIES HISTORY
In the history of the program, Minnesota has played 28 games against Michigan and 29 contests versus Michigan State. The Gophers hold a 15-8-5 advantage against the Wolverines, with the most recent result in the series being a 1-0 Minnesota road victory in 2018. Minnesota has not lost to Michigan since 2014, holding a 3-0-3 record over the previous six meetings. As for Michigan State, the Gophers possess a slim lead in the all-time series at 13-12-4. The most recent two matchups both resulted in 0-0 draws (2018, 2019), although the U wields a 2-0-2 record over the last four meetings. The Gophers have not lost to the Spartans since 2015.

LAST TIME OUT
In the season opener, Minnesota produced 110 minutes of shutout soccer on the defensive end. Goalkeepers Maddie Nielsen and Megan Plaschko combined for a shutout in goal, with Nielsen playing the first 45 minutes with one save and Plaschko totaling three saves while playing the final 65 minutes. Overall, Minnesota out-shot Nebraska 12-to-six and held a nine-to-one advantage on corner kicks.

GOLAN BECOMES LONGEST-TENURED GOPHER HEAD SOCCER COACH
With the 2020-21 campaign officially underway, head coach Stefanie Golan has now been at the helm of the program longer than any head coach in program history. Now in her ninth season with the Gophers, Golan has compiled an 87-60-22 (.518) record, won one B1G Regular Season Championship and two B1G Tournament Championships. Mikki Denney Wright (2004-11) is the only other Minnesota soccer coach to lead the program for at least eight seasons.

Dating back to the 2019 season, Minnesota has now shut out their opponents in two out of their previous three games. The Maroon & Gold previously shut out Northwestern, 1-0, on Oct. 24 of last season.
BUISMAN ACTIVE IN RETURN
Seeing her first game action since the 2018 season, McKenna Buisman paced the Maroon & Gold with five shots. In total, seven different Gophers notched at least one shot, with Buisman and Megan Gray both putting one shot on target.

Sophia Boman, Katie Duong, Gray, Athena Kuehn, Delaney Stekr and Patricia Ward each played all 110 minutes for the Gophers in the Feb. 21 season opener.
ROOKIE IMPACT
Two freshmen, Boman and Abi Frandsen, both made their collegiate debuts on Feb. 21, with each earning spots in Minnesota's starting lineup.
CAPTAINING THE SHIP
Kuehn, Makenzie Langdok and Celina Nummerdor will serve as captains for Minnesota throughout the season. These three Gophers will lead a six-player, team-elected Leadership Group that also consists of Alana Dressely, Stekr and Duong.
UP NEXT
After wrapping up their Michigan road trip, the Gophers will return home for a pair of contests against Northwestern (March 4) and Illinois (March 6).
