MINNEAPOLIS - After one day of competition at the 2021 Big Ten Conference Diving Championships, the Minnesota Gophers currently reside sixth with 26 points.
Sophomore Jake Butler remained the lead diver for the Maroon and Gold on day one, being the only Gopher to move past the preliminary stage of the one-meter springboard. After qualifying for the afternoon's consolation final with a 12th place finish in the preliminary round (310.95), the Seal Beach, Calif. native registered an eighth place finish (280.05) in the second round, reflecting a 16th place finish overall in the day's lone diving event.
Though falling short of reaching the later finals sessions, all three other competing Gophers did manage to score points for Minnesota. Senior Maxim Royzen finished 17th overall in the event with a six-dive score of 280.40, while junior Ryan Phillip (267.40) and senior Duncan Lester (259.85) finished 21st and 23rd, respectively.
Competition will resume Friday morning at 11:20 a.m. CT in West Lafayette, Ind., with the men set to take on the three-meter springboard. As always, all the action can be caught on BTN+, through the link above!
