Gophers Suffer Second Loss to Wisconsin
2/6/2021 10:59:00 PM | Men's Hockey
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 2 Minnesota men's hockey program suffered a second-straight loss to No. 11/12 Wisconsin on Saturday night, dropping an 8-1 contest at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
Minnesota (15-5-0 overall, 11-5-0-0-0-0 Big Ten) allowed a pair of early power play goals to the Badgers before briefly appearing to start a rally late in the first period when Ben Meyers scored his ninth goal of the year off assists from Bryce Brodzinski and Jonny Sorenson.
But the rally was short lived as Wisconsin (13-7-0, 11-5-0-0-1-0) didn't let its foot off the gas with another six goals over the course of regulation.
Three Gopher goalies saw action in the series finale with Jack LaFontaine (13-5-0) taking the loss. Jared Moe and Justen Close came in for relief appearances with Close playing the final period for his first appearance of the season.
Minnesota was outshot 28-31 on the night.
Quotes from Coach
"That's not a pretty weekend for Gopher Hockey," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "We've been awful good for most of the year, but Wisconsin came in here more determined. I was very impressed with how the maneuvered through the weekend. We stubbed our toe with the penalties tonight right off the bat, and we chased the game the rest of the way."
Up Next: Road Series at Notre Dame
Minnesota travels to Notre Dame next weekend for a two-game Big Ten series. The action begins on Friday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. CT (TV: NBC Sports; Stream: NBC Sports Digital Platforms; Radio: 1130 KTLK-AM/103.5 FM) and concludes on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 4:30 p.m. CT (Stream: NBC Sports Digital Platforms; Radio: 1130 KTLK-AM/103.5 FM).
