Gophers Earn Another Five-Set Win Over No. 13 Purdue

The No. 6 University of Minnesota earned its second-straight, come-from-behind five-set win over No. 13 Purdue, tonight in West Lafayette, Ind. Trailing two sets to one, the Golden Gophers came back to win the fourth and fifth to solidify the victory. The set scores were 25-18, 17-25, 17-25, 25-21 and 15-9. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 6-0 overall and in Big Ten play.
For the second-straight night, Stephanie Samedy had 20 kills in 50 attempts and had the double double with 10 digs. Taylor Landfair added a career-best 17 kills, while Adanna Rollins had 10 kills and 22 digs. Shea Rubright contributed a career-best nine kills and five blocks, while Regan Pittman had seven kills and four blocks. Melani Shaffmaster added 53 assists, 15 digs, three blocks and three kills. Jenna Wenaas had eight digs and two aces, while Rachel Kilkelly added 16 digs.
As a team, Minnesota hit .272, had 67 kills, three aces, 76 digs and 11 blocks. Purdue hit .227, had 63 kills, five aces, 12 blocks and 80 digs.
Notables
-Minnesota hit .650 in the fifth and final set. The Gophers also had 14 of its 15 points off of kills. In that fifth and deciding set, the Gophers had 14 kills, committing just one error in 20 attempts. The other Gopher point in the fifth set came on a solo block by Shaffmaster. In that set, Samedy had five kills in six swings and hit .833. Pittman also had four kills in four attempts.
-Minnesota has now won the last five matches against Purdue and are 56-31 all time.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota opened the match with a 6-1 run and later took the set, 25-18. A Jenna Wenaas ace gave the Gophers an early 3-0 lead, while a Pittman/Rollins block gave the Gophers an 8-3 advantage. Rubright had a kill for a 15-8 lead. The Gophers then went up 18-11 off a Rollins kill. Minnesota went up 23-16 on a Rubright/Samedy block, while a Samedy kill gave the Gophers set point. Minnesota also had a Samedy kill to make it 25-18.
Set 2: After trading points, Purdue went on a 6-0 run for a 12-8 lead. Minnesota cut the lead to two on a block at 11-13 and again a Rollins kill at 12-14. The Boilermakers, however, went on another 4-0 run to push the score to 18-12. A Purdue ace gave the Boilermakers a 20-14 lead. Purdue finished off the set on four-straight point for the set win.
Set 3: Purdue opened the third with a 9-4 lead, but the Gophers closed it to one with a Rubright/Samedy block. Purdue called a timeout and went on a 4-1 run. Trailing 15-9, Minnesota strung together four-straight and cut the Boilermaker lead to two at 15-13. Purdue, however, pushed the lead to 21-16 off a block as the Gophers called a timeout. The Boilermakers, however, closed out the set on a 4-1 run to take a 2-1 lead.
Set 4: Down three at 18-21, Minnesota tied the fourth set at 21 and finished off the set with a 7-0 run to come back and win the set, 25-21 and tied the match at 2-2. Minnesota tied the set off a Samedy kill to make it 21-21. The tie forced Purdue to call a timeout. Minnesota however, came out of the break and added three-straight kills from Samedy, Pittman and Landfair while Rollins provided an ace to tie the match.
Set 5: Minnesota hit an astounding .650 as a team in the fifth set to come back and take the match. Tied at 7-7, Samedy and Rollins each had a kill for a 9-7 lead and forced Purdue to call a timeout. The Gophers came out of the break and added kills from Shaffmaster and Rollins, which forced another Purdue timeout. The Gophers, however, poured on the pressure and posted four kills en route to the win.
