As the University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team approaches senior night and the last home meet of the regular season, each senior took time to reflect on a lifetime of gymnastics and put a lifetime's worth of memories into a few paragraphs. Take a trip through Lexy Ramler's personal story with the sport she has dedicated so much of her life to.
Dear Gymnastics,
I fell in love with you the moment I met you.
As a young girl, I could never get enough of you. I cartwheeled everywhere, turned my couch into a vault and practiced my kips on the playground during recess. I didn't know why I loved you so much, but each day you let me fly a little longer through the air. And even if I fell down trying something new, you taught me to rise up and chase after my dreams.
Through my competitive years, I still loved you even when I didn't think I did. I became addicted to you and the never ending pursuit of excellence. The only limit there was were the limits that I set for myself; something that drives me everyday. The challenge you provided, the constant hard work during the process and the final feeling of accomplishment is something that I love the most. We went through hard times of injuries, burnout and mental blocks, but I still came running back to you.
Now I look back at our memories we share and I wouldn't change a thing through the good times and the hard times. You have developed me into the person I am today. There were definitely some days where I didn't like you, but I always loved you and I always will love you. Thank you for teaching me, growing me as an individual and allowing me to impact others along the way.
You will forever have my heart.
GopherSports: How would you describe your Gopher women's gymnastics experience?
Lexy Ramler: When describing my Gopher women's gymnastics experience I think of growth. Growth of myself personally as an athlete, student and individual. I have developed in so many ways and different aspects, as well as taking away valuable experiences and lessons that I will bring forward to my future. I have also seen growth in my teammates and the program itself. The increase of fans at meets has been something that I have found so exciting and fun to watch. My Minnesota Gopher gymnastics experience has been an experience and opportunity of a lifetime that will impact myself and generations to come.
GS: What has been your favorite memory from your time on the team?
LR: My favorite memory from being on the team has been my Perfect 10 on beam at the Maturi Pavilion. I remember finishing my routine and feeling so good about my performance and running back to my teammates cheering. When both judges flashed a 10.00, the overwhelming feeling of accomplishment of all of my hard work day in and day out was worth it. The energy in the Pav from my teammates, coaches and fans was incredible and something that gives me goosebumps to this day.
GS: What are you going to miss the most?
LR: I am going to miss everything about being a student-athlete here at the University of Minnesota, but what I am going to miss the most is my team. I am going to miss cheering for each other during practice, competing with my teammates and seeing my teammates grow and achieve so many accomplishments. I am so grateful for being a part of so many incredible individuals and having the opportunity to develop so many lasting friendships.
