Hasz Finishes as NCAA Runner-Up

Bethany Hasz finished second in the women's 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- NCAA runner-up Bethany Hasz and Alec Basten each earned First Team All-America accolades in the 5,000 meters and were named NCAA Elite 90 award winners to lead the University of Minnesota track & field team on day two at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Friday.
"I could not be more proud of how the team represented the University of Minnesota both academically and athletically today," director of track & field/cross country Matt Bingle said. "It was a great day for both our men and womenĀ led byĀ Alec and Bethany both winning the prestigious Elite 90 awards and then both of them becoming All-Americans. Alec ran a great race to break the school record in the men's 5,000, andĀ Amira Young broke the school record in the 200 meters again, and she made the final, too. I'm proud of them for executing on thisĀ stage andĀ looking forward to day three tomorrow."
HaszĀ finished as national runner-up in the women's 5,000 meters, clocking a season-best time ofĀ 15:49.62 in a tactical race that saw a lead pack of nine remain together until the final 400 meters.Ā HaszĀ moved from fourth to second over the final 100 meters and finished second behind NCAA champion Joyce KimeliĀ of AuburnĀ inĀ 15:48.98 and edging third-place finisher Elly Henes of NC State (15:49.86).
Meanwhile, Basten executed a smart race of his own, finishing seventh to earn First Team All-America honors in the men's 5,000 meters. HeĀ ran a Minnesota indoor program record time of 13:32.98, improving on his previous PR by over 12 seconds (13:45.52) and bettering the previous program record ofĀ 13:33.42 held by Hassan Mead since 2012. The top 11 finishers in the field ran career-best times.Ā
Hasz and Basten, both Kinesiology majors,Ā were also honored for their efforts in the classroom on Friday as they each were named winners of the NCAA Elite 90 Award, presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships. Both Hasz andĀ BastenĀ are in graduate school at the University of Minnesota with Hasz pursuing her M.Ed. in Sport and Exercise Science and Basten pursuing his M.S. in Kinesiology with an emphasisĀ in exercise physiology.
Friday's action on the track also saw Amira Young secure her place in Saturday's 200-meter final with a career-best time of 23.16 toĀ finish sixth in the preliminary heats. With her PR, Young improved on her own Minnesota program record for the fourth time this season. Young also clocked a time of 7.32 seconds in the 60-meter semifinals, finishing 13th to earn Second Team All-America honors.Ā
Action concludes at the NCAA Championships on Saturday. Basten races the men's 3,000 meters at 3 p.m. followed by Young in the 200-meter final at 6:50 p.m. The Gophers' women'sĀ 4x400-meter relay team of Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs, Val Larson, and Abigail SchaaffeĀ caps off the meet at 7:20 p.m. Live coverage is available via ESPN3.
