Basten Breaks Gopher Record in NCAA Final

Alec Basten placed fifth in the 3,000 meters to lead Minnesota on the third and final day of the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- First Team All-American Alec Basten finished fifth in the 3,000 meters in a Minnesota program record time to lead the Golden Gophers on the third and final day of the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday.

Basten left it all on the track for the Gopher men, running a four-second PR and program record time of 7:52.05 in the 3,000 meters just 24 hours after breaking the Minnesota program record in the 5,000 meters (13:32.98) to finish seventh in the event. The Green Bay, Wis., native improved on the previous Gophers' program record of 7:52.52 held by Ben Blankenship since 2011. Basten concludes the NCAA Indoor Championships as a two-time First Team All-American and the 2021 NCAA Elite 90 Award winner.

"I was super impressed with Alec today," director of track & field/cross country Matt Bingle said. "He looked fresh. He was really locked in mentally, very in control, and very mature. He's just a great young man and a great teammate. I was so happy to see him do what he did. It's very well-deserved."

Basten and Kaleb Siekmeier, who placed seventh in men's weight throw on day one of NCAA competition, combined to score eight points for Minnesota, landing the Gopher men in a tie for 25th in the NCAA team standings.

"What I really liked about this whole weekend is that the team, just like they've done all year, was very mature and in control about doing their jobs," Bingle said. "If they make a mistake, they respond to it. In many ways, as coaches, we just kind of step back and talk to them, but they're the ones making the adjustments and being mature about it.

"I'm excited about their ability to respond to everything they've faced this year. I'm just amazed by how they've done things and what they've accomplished. They're a mature group, growing together, supporting each other, and responding to each other. It's been a lot of fun to coach them this season."

On the women's side, Amira Young joined Basten in collecting two All-America accolades at the national meet, adding an eighth-place finish and First Team All-America nod in the 200 meters to her 13th-place finish and Second Team All-America award in the 60 meters. Young improved on her own Minnesota program record with a PR of 23.16 in the 200-meter prelims and ran 23.47 for eighth place in Saturday's final.

"Amira has had an awesome indoor season from beginning to end," Bingle said. "To come in here, her first time at the indoor national meet, and break the school record in the 200m again yesterday, she's done a great job mentally. She knows there's more in the tank, and she's excited about it. She's another person who is a great human and a great teammate. She continues to respond to competition, so we're excited for outdoor."

Jayla Campbell, Abigail Schaaffe, Val Larson, and Janielle Josephs closed out the national meet for the women by finishing 11th in the 4x400-meter relay on Saturday. They clocked a time of 3:35.70, just shy of their season-best 3:35.51 used to win the Big Ten title two weeks ago.

"I thought the 4x400-meter relay did a good job competing. They did a good job responding to the competition. Given the huge emotional high from the Big Ten meet and everything that went on between then and now, for the whole group to come into this meet and again rise up, I thought that was pretty cool and great to see them respond that way."

Led by eight points from NCAA runner-up Bethany Hasz in the 5,000 meters on Friday evening, the Gopher women finished the meet with nine points to tie for 24th in the nation.

The national competition continues for the Maroon & Gold as the No. 11 Gopher women's cross country team heads to Stillwater, Okla., for the 2020-21 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Monday. The women's 6K race is scheduled for 11:50 a.m. CT with live coverage via ESPNU.
