Gophers Open Season at Oak Ridge

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Gopher rowing program opened the 2021 season on Saturday at the Cardinal Invite as the Maroon & Gold returned to action after year-long wait at the very competition they were set to compete at before the 2020 campaign was abruptly canceled.
Minnesota's first action of the season saw the Gopher race in two sessions on Saturday at the Melton Lake Rowing Venue with a third session set for Sunday morning.
Saturday's morning session saw the varsity boats race Alabama and Tulsa with Minnesota's 1V4+ boat finishing second at 7:22.426. The 1V8+ boat clocked a time of 6:27.211, the 2V8+ boat raced 6:34.506 and the 2V4+ boat finished with a time of 7:30.037 as all three boats placed third. Minnesota's 1N8+ boat also finished third with a time of 6:58.151 while competing against Virginia and Wisconsin's lightweight team.
The afternoon session was much improved as the Maroon & Gold led four of their five races to close out the day including two races that saw the Gophers top boats from No. 11 Indiana. The 1V8+ boat ran 6:19.206 to pace its race and finish ahead of the Hoosiers and hosting Louisville. The 1N8+ also bested Indiana in head-to-head action with a time of 6:51.747. Minnesota's 1V4+ boat finished first at 7:12.970 as did the 2V4 boat at 7:24.611. The 2V8+ boat finished second behind Indiana with a time of 6:30.904.
