‘U’ Opens Season with Four Wins at Cardinal Invite

3/14/2021 2:03:00 PM | Rowing

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Gopher rowing program opened the 2021 season with four wins over the weekend at the Cardinal Invite as the Maroon & Gold returned to action after a year-long wait.

Saturday's morning session at the Melton Lake Rowing Venue saw the varsity boats race Alabama and Tulsa with Minnesota's First Varsity Four boat finishing second at 7:22.426. The First Varsity Eight boat clocked a time of 6:27.211, the Second Varsity Eight boat raced 6:34.506 and the Second Varsity Four boat finished with a time of 7:30.037 as all three boats placed third. Minnesota's First Novice Eight boat also finished third with a time of 6:58.151 while competing against Virginia and Wisconsin's lightweight team.

The afternoon session was much improved as the Maroon & Gold led four of their five races to close out the day including two races that saw the Gophers top boats from No. 11 Indiana. The First Varsity Eight boat ran 6:19.206 to pace its race and finish ahead of the Hoosiers and hosting Louisville. The First Novice Eight also bested Indiana in head-to-head action with a time of 6:51.747. Minnesota's First Varsity Four boat finished first at 7:12.970 as did the 2V4 boat at 7:24.611. The Second Varsity Eight boat finished second behind Indiana with a time of 6:30.904.

Sunday saw all five Minnesota boats race against No. 7 Virginia and Clemson with the Maroon & Gold picking up runner-up showings in all five competitions behind the Cavaliers. The First Varsity Eight boat raced 6:29.354 while the Second Varsity Eight group finished at 6:37.720 and the First Novice Eight boat clocked a 6:58.521. The First Varsity Four team finished in 7:27.833 while the Second Varsity Four boat finished with a time of 7:33.455.

Quotes from Coach
"This was a weekend of persistence and growth for our team," Minnesota Head Coach Alicea Strodel said. "I'm very pleased with the way all of our boats responded after Saturday morning's races.  To come back Saturday afternoon and win four out of five races against a perennially strong Indiana team showed character and resilience.

Competing at an early season race against many southern schools has its challenges. As we get more and more time on the water, I am confident that our boats will continue to respond and find speed.

Overall, a good starting point for the 2021 spring season.  This was the first 2,000 meter race in a Minnesota uniform for many of our athletes.  And for that we are incredibly grateful."
