Gophers Sit in Top-10 After First Day at Briar’s Creek

3/15/2021 9:15:00 PM | Women's Golf

The University of Minnesota women's golf team is currently in ninth place after the first day at the par 72, 6,110-yd course at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek. The Gophers were scheduled to play two rounds on Monday but had their second round suspended due to darkness.

Notable
With a 3-over-par first round, senior Joanne Free is the top Gopher on the current leaderboard with a 75. Free recorded three birdies in the first 18 holes.

Sophomores Emma Carpenter and Grace Curran both shot 77 and were 5-over-par at the conclusion of round one. Classmate Annabelle Ackroyd followed closely behind with a 79. Senior Grace Kellar was disqualified from the first round due to a scorecard error.

Quotable
"Today we played in some of the toughest conditions I've seen for 36 holes with 35+ mph gusts and sustained winds of 20 mph," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "I am so proud of the way the team grinded and stayed patient. We definitely left shots on the course, but we also capitalized on opportunities. We've got a chance tomorrow to finish in the top half of a deep field and earn some ranked wins."

Play will resume on Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. CT, immediately followed by the final round with a shotgun start at approximately 8:00 a.m. CT. Fans can follow along at golfstat.com using the link above.
