MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota soccer team battled for 90 minutes against No. 11 Penn State in University Park on Thursday afternoon, but ultimately came up short, 3-0.
Despite entering the half with a lead in shots (3-2) and corners (2-0), the Gophers found themselves in an early 2-0 deficit.
In the 18th minute, Penn State midfielder Ally Schlegel gave the Nittany Lions the lead on a goal assisted by Frankie Tagliaferri and Sam Coffey. Four minutes later, Schlegel again found the back of the net, this time assisted by Payton Linnehan and Tagliaferri.
Sophia Boman registered a pair of quality shots in the first half, with her second coming from several feet beyond the 18-yard box and just barely sailing over the top of the goal. Katie Duong put a shot on goal as well late in the second half, but it was turned away by Penn State goalkeeper Katherine Asman.
Moving into the second half, the Minnesota offense picked up the pace and generated a steady diet of chances, but none were able to find the back of the net. In the second half alone, the Gophers produced 15 shots including three on target.
Penn State extended their lead in the 73rd minute, as Sam Coffey scored on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. Coffey's goal represented the last of the scoring in the game.
Overall, Minnesota finished with an edge in shots (18-4) and corners (3-0), while holding even with Penn State at four shots on goal apiece.
Boman paced all Gophers with six shots, while Arianna Del Moral and Makenzie Langdok registered five and four shots, respectively. Del Moral, Katie Duong, Langdok and Celina Nummerdor all placed shots on goal in the game.
Boman, Duong, Athena Kuehn and Plaschko each started and played all 90 minutes for Minnesota.
Notable
In outshooting Penn State, 18-4, Minnesota has now outshot their opponents in each of their seven games to open the season. In total, the Gophers have outshot their opponents by a 111-36 margin on the year.
Quotable
"I am disappointed in the result for sure," head coach Stefanie Golan said. "Our kids played their hearts out, but Penn State was opportunistic, which great teams are. We took too many shots from distance and didn't show enough composure and willingness to take risks in the final third. We will learn from this one and go again on Sunday."
Up Next
Minnesota will remain on the east coast through the weekend, as the Gophers wrap up their 2021 road slate with a matchup against No. 21 Rutgers on Sunday, March 21. Thereafter, the Maroon & Gold return home for the final three games of the season against Purdue (March 25), Maryland (March 28) and Wisconsin (April 3).
