Minnesota Earns Record 38th NCAA Tournament Berth

MINNEAPOLIS – For the 38th time in the team's 100-season history, the Gopher men's hockey program is heading to the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship as Minnesota earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA West Regional and will open the tournament against No. 4 seed Omaha on Saturday, March 27 in Loveland, Colo. The regional, hosted at the Budweiser Events Center, will see the Gophers play their semifinal at 9:00 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
With its first NCAA tournament berth since 2017, Minnesota is now set to make an NCAA-record 38th appearance in the national tournament (Michigan has also earned a berth for the 38th time this year). The Gophers lead all college hockey programs with 55 NCAA tournament wins (55-38 all-time record) while the Maroon & Gold have won five national championships (1974, 1976, 1979, 2002, 2003).
"We've got a group of guys here…this will be their first NCAA tournament, and we couldn't be more excited," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "All you hope is that you're playing your best when you get in this thing, and I think we are."
Minnesota and Omaha will meet for the first time in NCAA tournament play while the Gophers are 4-3-0 all-time against the Mavericks. No. 2 seed Minnesota State and No. 3 seed Quinnipiac will face off in the other regional semifinal on Saturday before the regional final on Sunday, March 28 with a trip to the NCAA Division I Frozen Four on the line. The regional final will be played at 7:00 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
