MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota senior Angus Flanagan is tied for 14th place after the opening round of The Goodwin Thursday in Palo Alto, Calif.
Flanagan's one-under-par 69 matches his season low, set earlier this month in the second round of the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island, and is also the lowest by a Gopher this year. Like the rest of his teammates, Flanagan began his day on the 10th hole and proceeded to birdie No. 11 to quickly get in the red. He followed with a bogey and double bogey on the next two holes before a birdie on No. 16 helped him make the turn at one-over.
The Woking, England, native turned it on over his final nine holes, posting three birdies to just one bogey for a 2-under 33 on the front. A birdie on No. 1 got him back to even, while a bogey on the third hole sent him back over par. He posted birdies on holes five and seven, however, to finish his day under par.
Unfortunately no other Gopher on the day finished better than six-over-par. That leaves the team in 26th place with a +20 round of 300.
Junior Lincoln Johnson recorded one birdie in an opening round 76 that has him tied for 100th. He was three-over on both the front and back nines, with his birdie coming on hole No. 1.
Like Johnson, senior Thomas Longbella tallied one birdie in his round of 77 and is now tied for 111th. He was five-over through his first nine holes, including his birdie on No. 16, but only two-over during his final nine.
Sophomore Connor Glynn was in good shape through his first nine holes, making the turn back to No. 1 tied at two-over-par. Unfortunately, a quadruple bogey on No. 2 cost him four shots and he ended up shooting an eight-over 78, putting himself tied for 119th.
Junior Will Grevlos made his season stroke play debut with a 10-over 80, shooting a 40 on the front nine and a 40 on the back. He enters round two tied for 141st.
Host-Stanford leads the team competition through 18 holes at 5-under 275, while fourth-ranked Arizona State is in second place at 2-under and Denver and San Diego are tied for third at 1-under. Individually, St. Mary's Blake Hathcoat and Nevada's Sam Harned both shot a 7-under 63 to grab the round one lead, while Denver's Jackson Solem is one shot back of them.
Minnesota is back out on the course Friday afternoon at 3:20 CT for round two of The Goodwin.
