MINNEAPOLIS – With senior Angus Flanagan and sophomore Connor Glynn both posting rounds under par, Minnesota men's golf had its best performance of the season Friday in the second round of The Goodwin in Palo Alto, Calif.
Flanagan shot a 2-under-par 68, while Glynn added a 1-under 69 as Minnesota climbed six spots in the standings thanks to a 4-over 284. It was the team's best stroke total by 12 shots over its previous best this year, while its score to par was four shots better. Minnesota is in 20th place at +24, 584.
Fourth-ranked Arizona State leads the team score with a 9-under, 551, while host-Stanford is the only other team under par at 4-under, 567.
The 68 shot by Flanagan was his best this season and the best by a Gopher. One of six golfers in the 146-player field to be under par in both rounds, he's now in a five-way tie for sixth place entering Saturday's final round at 3-under, 137.
After a bogey on his second hole, Flanagan was 1-over on the day until he birdied No. 6 to kick off a stretch of three birdies in four holes to close out his front nine. He started his back nine with a second bogey, but recorded birdies on holes 12 and 16 to get to 3-under. He closed his day going bogey-par to put himself five shots behind tournament leader Blake Hathcoat of St. Mary's.
Glynn's round was his first under par this season. He's 7-over for the tournament at 147, climbing 50 spots from 119th after round one to 69th through 36 holes. After pars on the first six holes of the day, Glynn birdied holes and seven and eight to get to 2-under. He went birdie-bogey-birdie between holes 13-15 to move to 3-under, but ended at 1-under following bogeys on 17 and 18.
Junior Lincoln Johnson had his best round of the season with a 2-over 72. A birdie on No. 2 got him under par but he finished his front nine at +1 after bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes. He started his back nine by sandwiching bogeys around a second birdie on No. 11. Johnson continued to battle, though, and posted consecutive birdies on holes 15 and 16 to get back to even. His day ended with back-to-back bogeys, but he moved up from a tie for 100th after round one to a tie for 79th place after round at +8, 148.
Senior Thomas Longbella improved two strokes from Thursday with a 5-over 75. He bogeyed four of the first seven holes, but responded by playing the next eight holes at 2-under thanks to three birdies between holes nine and 15. Unfortunately, he ended his round with three more bogeys and is currently tied for 114th at +12, 152.
Junior Will Grevlos shot a season-best round of 77. Though he was six-over through the front nine, he used a pair of birdies to cancel out two of his three bogeys and finish one-over on the back. He's +17 (157) through 36 holes and tied for 135th place.
Final round action at The Goodwin begins for the Gophers at 9 a.m. CT Saturday.
