MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota men's golf finished 24th out of 28 teams as the final round of The Goodwin took place Saturday at Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.
The Golden Gophers posted a +21, 301 Saturday to finish 45 shots over par for the tournament at 885 (300-284-301). Arizona State claimed the team title with a 13-under, 797. Host-Stanford was the only other team in the field to finish under par, coming in at 7-under.
Nevada's Sam Harned and St. Mary's Blake Hathcoat tied for medalist honors as each finished 10-under par at 200.
For the second time in as many tournaments this spring, senior Angus Flanagan was the top finisher for Minnesota as he tied for 24th with a 2-over 212 (69-68-75). Flanagan started his final round strong with a birdie on his opening hole. He bogeyed No. 2 but got back under par with a birdie on No. 5. Unfortunately, a double bogey on the sixth hole moved him over par and that's where he would remain the rest of the round. After a bogey on No. 10, he got his third birdie of the round on No. 11 and was just 1-over heading to 16. However, he triple bogeyed the par-5 16th and ended up with his highest round of the tournament.
Senior Thomas Longbella (77-75-73) and sophomore Connor Glynn (78-69-78) each tied for 107th at +15, 226.
Longbella had his lowest round of the season with a 3-over 73 Saturday. Like Flanagan, he opened with a birdie on his first hole but ran into trouble with a bogey on No. 4 and a double at No. 7. Longbella ended his front nine with his second birdie of the day, then bookended his back nine with bogeys on holes 10 and 18 with pars in between.
After a season-best 69 in round two, Glynn rode the momentum with three birdies in his first four holes Saturday. Unfortunately, he bogeyed three of the next four holes to make the turn at even-par. Trouble started on the back nine with a triple bogey on No. 10 and he followed with a double-bogey-double before ending his round with five consecutive pars.
Junior Lincoln Johnson finished two shots back of Longbella and Glynn, tying for 121st at +17 with a 227 (76-72-79). Johnson had three birdies in his round, but was four shots over par just three holes into his final round. He made the turn at +8 and finished his round 9-over with a 79.
Fellow junior Will Grevlos had his best round of the weekend with a 5-over 75 Sunday, and he completed his first stroke play tournament of the season with a +22, 232 (80-77-75) to tie for 137th. Grevlos did not have any birdies in the round, though he did have 14 pars, including eight on the back nine.
