Illinois Snaps Nine-Game Gopher Win Streak

CHAMPAIGN, ILL. - The University of Minnesota softball program's nine-game win streak came to an end today as Illinois defeated the Golden Gophers, 8-0 in five innings. The Golden Gophers won the previous three games against the Illini and took the series. Minnesota now sits at 12-4, while Illinois improves to 11-5.Â
Katelyn Kemmetmueller and Natalie DenHartog each went 1-2 today. Amber Fiser picked up the loss and is now 5-3 this season. Overall on the weekend, Kemmetmueller hit .444 this series, had two home runs and four hits. MaKenna Partain had six hits this past weekend, scored three runs and had a double. As a team, the Gophers hit nine home runs, had 29 hits and scored 20 runs.Â
Illinois scored in three innings to solidify the win. The Illini took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when a double knocked in a run. The Illini plated six runs in the bottom of the third off four hits and three errors. Illinois added the final run in the sixth off an RBI single.Â
Minnesota is back in action next weekend when it hosts its home opening series, April 2-4 at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium when Purdue comes to town. Friday's game is set for a 3 p.m. start, followed by a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon. The Gophers and Boilermakers close out the series at noon on April 4.
