MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota senior golfer Angus Flanagan has been named one of 10 members of the Great Britain and Ireland squad for the 48th Walker Cup, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews announced Tuesday.
Scheduled to take place May 8-9, 2021, at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Fla., the competition takes place every two years and pits amateurs from the United States against those from Great Britain and Ireland.
With his selection, Flanagan joins John Harris (1993, '95, '97, '01 -- USA) as the only Gophers to ever compete in the event.
"The Walker Cup is the pinnacle of the amateur game for these players and we are delighted that they will have the opportunity to compete against their counterparts from the USA at Seminole," GB&I captain Stuart Wilson said. ""It gives them the opportunity to display their exceptional talent and will provide a lifetime of memories.
"After a difficult year with the Covid-19 pandemic, we are all looking forward to the match this year and I know the team will be doing their very best to win back the Walker Cup."
According to the Walker Cup website, each of the two competition days features foursomes (alternate-shot) matches in the morning followed by singles matches in the afternoon. On Saturday, there are eight singles matches, while all 10 players from each side compete in singles on Sunday. One full point is awarded for each victory, while a half-point is earned for matches that are all square after 18 holes. As the two-time defending champion, the United States needs 13 points to retain the Cup while GB&I needs 13.5 points to capture it.
Flanagan has competed in both of Minnesota's stroke play tournaments this spring, finishing 30th or better in both. He leads the Gophers in scoring average (71.67), rounds under par (3), and lowest rounds of 18 (68) and 54 holes (212).
A third-team All-American a year ago, Flanagan has a career scoring mark of 71.76, which currently ranks second best in program history. He's been the Gophers' top finisher in 16 of the 28 tournaments in which he's competed, while tallying 33 rounds under par and having over 90 percent of his scores counting toward the team score.
As an amateur, Flanagan won medalist honors at the Western Amateur Championship, Minnesota State Open and Minnesota Golf Champions last summer before making his PGA TOUR debut at the 3M Open in July thanks to a sponsor's exemption following his win at the State Open. In December he won two of his three matches to help lead the international squad to victory at the Arnold Palmer Cup, while this February, he won the Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase to earn an exemption into the PGA's Genesis Invitational.
