Stanke Named to Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award ­Watch List

MINNEAPOLIS - Junior catcher Chase Stanke has been named to the 2021 Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award ­Watch List, as announced by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission on Tuesday.

Given annually to the top Division I catcher in the nation, the Buster Posey Watch List will be updated to include other candidates until May 5, 2021. The current list will be narrowed down to semifinalists, whom will be announced on May 20. Finalists will be named on June 7.

Prior to the 2021 season, Stanke established himself as one of the premier defensive catchers in the country after a standout 2020 campaign in which he paced the Big Ten Conference in putouts (172) while finishing tied for first in runners caught stealing (seven) and pickoffs (one). Overall, Stanke owns a .995 career fielding percentage.

Over the summer, Stanke made strides at the plate while playing in the Northwoods League. Across 100 at bats, the Gopher backstop slashed .310/.360/.470 with three home runs, one triple, five doubles, 14 runs and 22 RBI. As a result, Stanke received 2020 Northwoods League Postseason All-Star honors.

Through the first four games of 2021, Stanke owns a .273/.467/.364 batting line with one double, three RBI and one run scored. He has played errorless defense through the season's opening weekend.
