Minnesota Readies for NCAA Regionals

The No. 8 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team will compete in the Athens Regional on Friday April 2-3. All sessions will be streamed live on ESPN3. 

The Athens Regional will be hosted at the Stegeman Coliseum by the University of Georgia as one of four regional meets held nationally. In addition to Minnesota, the regional will feature No. 1 Florida, No. 9 Denver, No. 16 Illinois, Georgia, Oregon State, Central Michigan, NC State and Western Michigan. 

Minnesota will compete in session one of the second round against Denver, Georgia and Oregon State. The meet will be at 12:00 p.m. CT on April 2. Session two features Florida, Illinois, Central Michigan and the winner of N.C. State and Western Michigan. It will begin at 6 p.m. CT. 

The top two teams from each second round session will advance to the Regional Final at 6 p.m. on April 3. The top two teams will advance to NCAA Championships April 16-17 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

Last Time Out
For the first time since 2006, the University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team captured the Big Ten tournament title at the Big Ten Championship in Minneapolis. The Golden Gophers tallied a program-record 197.750 to win their sixth conference championship and snap Michigan's streak of six consecutive titles.

Overall, Minnesota led the way with four individual event champions. Lexy Ramler won the all-around (39.725), bars (9.950) and beam title (9.975), while Ona Loper won the floor title (9.950).

Gophers in the Rankings
Minnesota holds strong at No. 8 overall after being ranked No. 7 last week. The Maroon and Gold is ranked sixth on vault, seventh on bars, fifth on beam and tied for tenth on floor. 

Ramler is ranked in the top-25 in each category: all-around (2), on vault (T-5), bars (3), beam (T-1) and floor (T-28). Loper continues to be nationally ranked tied for No. 3 on vault, tied for No. 10 on floor and No. 13 in the all-around. Mya Hooten is tied for fourth in the nation on floor, Maddie Quarles ties for No. 12 in the country on vault and Mary Korlin-Downs is tied for 13th on beam.

Record Setting Gophers
Minnesota set a program record team score of 197.750 at the Big Ten Championships, claiming their first tournament title since 2006.

In their first meet of the season, Minnesota posted their best opening meet team score with a 197.025. This beat the record set last year at Denver when the Gophers recorded 196.475 points.

The Gophers tied their second highest program team score of 197.625 on Saturday, Feb. 20 against Rutgers. 

Following the first week of competition, Minnesota earned a No. 4 national ranking which tied for the highest in program history.

At the Big Five Meet, the Gophers set a new program record on bars, scoring a 49.575 team score on the event to eclipse the previous record of 49.525 set on February 15, 2019.

On March 5th, Minnesota tied the program high on floor by scoring a 49.575 as a team on the event. Freshman Mya Hooten recorded the first perfect 10 on floor in Gophers program history.

WCGA Regular Season All-Americans
The Regular Season All-America Award winners for the 2021 season were announced by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) and the University of Minnesota has five representatives on the list.

Student-athletes with the top eight National Qualifying Scores (NQS) for the regular season, including ties, for each event plus the all-around earned All-America honors. Second team All-America honors were earned by student athletes ranked. No 9-16, with ties, in the NQS.

Ramler earned All-American honors in the all-around, vault, bars and beam. Loper was named an All-American on vault and also Second Team All-America on floor and in the all-around. Freshman phenom Hooten was recognized as an All-American on floor. Korlin-Downs was awarded with Second Team All-American honors on beam and Quarles was Second Team All-American on vault.

B1G Awards
Ramler was recently named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, her third consecutive year winning the award. Ramler earned the nomination in the midst of her stellar senior campaign. She has scored a perfect 10 on both vault and beam, and has also set a new program record in the all-around with a 39.850. Ramler has won 24 event titles so far this season and has been named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week five times. She is currently tied for No. 1 in the nation on beam, No. 2 on bars, tied for No. 4 on vault, No. 23 on floor and No. 2 overall in the all-around. Ramler is also a finalist for the AAI Award, recognizing the most outstanding senior female gymnast in the country.

Senior Hannah Willmarth was named Minnesota's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
