MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota senior Angus Flanagan shot a 3-under 69 Sunday afternoon to hold off the field and claim medalist honors at the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.

The tournament leader through 36 holes, Flanagan finished 9-under for the tournament with a 207 (68-70-69), claiming the third individual title in his standout career at Minnesota. Previously, he won the 2019 Macdonald Cup and was co-medalist at the 2019 Big Ten Championship.

Starting the day on the sixth hole, Flanagan had the first of his four birdies on the day at the par-4 eighth. Three holes later, he had another and was 2-under through six and in sole possession of first place. He then proceeded to card nine pars in a row to remain 2-under on the day and 8-under for the tournament with just three holes to play, though at that point he had been caught atop the leaderboard by Kent State's Jared Wilson.

Flanagan kicked it into high gear, however, notching back-to-back birdies on the par-4 3rd and the par-5 4th, while Wilson recorded pars, turning what had been a tie into a two-shot lead for the Woking, England, native. Flanagan finished with a bogey on No. 5, but Wilson finished his day with four straight pars, proving Flanagan's lead was too much to overcome.
As a team, Minnesota tied for third with Purdue with a 5-under 859 (281-292-286). Kent State took home the team title at 12-under, while Illinois was second at 10-under. It's the best team finish and score to par for the Golden Gophers since winning the 2019 Macdonald Cup at 10-under.

In addition to Flanagan's victory, Minnesota also got a top-10 performance from freshman Ben Warian. A Stillwater, Minn., native, Warian matched his opening round of 70, tying for the lowest 18-hole score of his young career. He finished with a 2-under 214 (70-74-70) to end in a five-way tie for ninth. Warian, who climbed nine spots from his second-round finish, opened his Sunday on the seventh hole and had back-to-back birdies on the ninth and 10th holes. He added a third on No. 16 before a double bogey on No. 18 cost him two shots. After three consecutive pars, he finished his day birdie-bogey-birdie.

Senior Thomas Longbella had his best finish, lowest 54-hole score and best score to par this spring as he tied for 33rd at +5, 221 (70-77-74). He opened the day on No. 8 and had a quick bogey on No. 9, though he later got in the red with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 15 and 16. His score remained at -1 through 13 holes, while his final five holes featured four bogeys and one birdie.

Sophomore Harrison Arnold and junior Lincoln Johnson each tied for 48th at +9, 225.

Arnold shot a season-low 73 in Sunday's final round. Beginning on No. 9, he started off with three bogeys in his first four roles, but rallied to get back to even-par thanks to three birdies in a row between holes 14-16. Falling a shot with a bogey on No. 1, Arnold again put together consecutive birdies on the second and third holes to get into the red. He followed with two more bogeys before closing his round with three straight pars.

After rounds of 73 and 71 Saturday, Johnson had his highest score of the weekend with an 81 Sunday, though he did have three birdies in his final round.

Minnesota closes out the regular season next weekend with the Git R Done Husker Invitational at Firethorn Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb.
