Over half of the teams in this week's national rankings will be in action at the B1G Invitational including Minnesota.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 17 Gopher rowing program continues the 2021 campaign this weekend at the inaugural B1G Invitational. Hosted at Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio, the event is scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 17 with races wrapping up on Sunday, April 18. The B1G Invitational will feature 16 collegiate women's rowing teams and over 600 athletes. Eight schools from the Big Ten will participate in the spring event including Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Rutgers and Wisconsin. Guest teams from outside of the Big Ten are expected to compete include Alabama, Brown, Duke, Louisville, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Tennessee, Virginia. Practice sessions will occur on April 16, with three rounds of racing over the course of the event, more than 70 races will be held throughout the weekend.
IN THE RANKINGS
The Gophers head back into competition as the No. 17 team in this week's Pocock/CRCA Division I Rankings. After receiving votes in the preseason polls, Minnesota has earned a national rankings in each of the first five in-season polls. Over half of the teams in this week's national rankings will be in action at the B1G Invitational.
BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS SHAKE UP SETTING
The Big Ten Conference has announced a change of setting for the 2021 Big Ten Rowing Championships. Originially slated to be held in Devil's Lake, Wis., the event will now be hosted at the Indianapolis Rowing Center in Indianapolis, Ind. The Big Ten championships will still be held on Sunday, May 16.
SUCCESS OFF THE WATER
Minnesota is coming off of one of its best semesters ever in the classroom as the Gophers set a new program record with a 3.42 team cumulative grade point average while its 3.58 team term grade point average was second in program history behind last spring's score. As a department, the University of Minnesota set a new school record with a 3.41 cumulative grade point average as the Gophers increased the statistic for the sixth-straight semester.
THREE TO LEAD IN 2021
Three Maroon & Gold student-athletes will guide the Gophers this season as captains with Meade Avery (Lyme, N.H.), Lindsay Eliasen (Chanhassen, Minn.) and Gabby Mullally (Neenah, Wis.) selected to lead the program through a unique season.
'U' SET FOR SIX COMPETITIONS IN 2021
Minnesota announced its competition schedule for the 2021 rowing season earlier this year with the Maroon & Gold prepared to race in six competitions. The Gophers start the year at the Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tenn. (March 13-14), followed by a five-team competition at Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio (April 3). Minnesota then heads to the inaugural B1G Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio (April 17-18) before competing in a dual at Iowa (April 25) and the Dale England Cup in Bloomington, Ind. (May 1). The Big Ten Championships are currently scheduled to be held in Indianapolis (May 16).
