MINNEAPOLIS – Two straight medalist honors have resulted in consecutive Big Ten Golfer of the Week accolades for Minnesota senior Angus Flanagan.
One week after winning both the Boilermaker Invitational and taking home conference honors, Flanagan has followed up by winning the Git R Done Husker Invitational and being named co-Big Ten Golfer of the Week. He is sharing the award with Iowa's Alex Schaake, who was the medalist at the Hawkeye Invitational.
It's the third time in Flanagan's career that he's been named Big Ten Golfer of the Week. He's now one of two golfers in program history to accomplish the feat along with Bronson LaCassie, who holds the program record with four Golfer of the Week accolades. James McLean has been named Big Ten Golfer of the Week twice and Big Ten Golfer of the Month twice, as well. The award was changed from monthly to weekly after the 1998 season.
Flanagan shot a 5-under 66 this past Sunday to become the first Gopher to win consecutive tournaments since Jose Mendez won the Rutherford Intercollegiate and then the Big Ten Championship in the spring of 2014. The round of 66 for Flanagan was the lowest by a Gopher this season and one shot off his career-low of 65, done twice previously. His 54-hole score of 6-under 207 (70-71-66) secured a one-shot victory over Kansas State's Tim Tillmanns and Michigan State's Troy Taylor II.
Flanagan's day could not have started much better as he was 5-under through the front nine. After a par on No. 1, he birdied holes 2-4 and then followed with a par and another birdie on No. 6. Back-to-back pars were followed by a fifth birdie on No. 9 for a 31 on the front. He made it to 6-under thanks to a sixth birdie on No. 11 before ending his day with six pars in a row and a bogey on No. 18.
Flanagan was four shots back through the opening two rounds as he posted rounds of 70 and 71. Starting on the ninth hole, Flanagan was 1-under on the back nine of his opening round. He was even on the front as his birdie on No. 3 canceled out his bogey on No. 5. The 70 marked his fourth straight round under par, including last week's Boilermaker Invitational.
In Flanagan's second round, he was even over the back nine with two birdies on holes 11 and 18. He bogeyed No. 2 but immediately followed with a birdie on No. 3 and then posted pars the rest of the way for his fifth straight round at par or better.
Minnesota is this week before gearing up for the Big Ten Championships at Crooked Stick Golf Course in Carmel, Ind., April 30 through May 2.
