Young Leads Gophers at Fighting Illini B1G Relays

Amira Young won the 100m and 200m to lead Minnesota on day one of this weekend's competition on Friday.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The Golden Gophers combined for four event titles and recorded six all-time top-10 marks on day one at the Fighting Illini B1G Relays at Illinois' new Demirjian Park Stadium in Champaign, Ill., on Friday.

Amira Young led the Maroon & Gold with a pair of event titles, winning both the 100m and 200m, while Bethany Hasz won the 1500m and Abigail Schaaffe won the 400m hurdles to round out Minnesota's four event wins.

Young ran 11.49 seconds to win the 100m and posted a winning time of 23.54 seconds in the 200m. In the men's short sprints, Kion Benjamin led the Gophers, finishing second in the 100m in a career-best 10.47 seconds and placing fourth in the 200m in 20.92 seconds to tie for fifth in Minnesota history.

Hasz and Abby Kohut-Jackson led nine Gophers with career-best times in the 1500m. Hasz moved into sixth among all-time Gophers with a winning time of 4:18.41 while Kohut-Jackson finished as runner-up in 4:19.53 to rank eighth in program history. Six more women clocked 1500m PRs for the Maroon & Gold as well, and Khalid Hussein ran a career-best time of 3:54.33 on the men's side. 

Schaaffe won her second 400m hurdles title of the season with a career-best time of 58.63 seconds to move into eighth in program history. Val Larson took third in a career-best 59.17 seconds to rank ninth in Minnesota history as well. Noah Burton finished second in the men's 400m hurdles in a career-best 51.65 seconds to rank third in Gophers' history and Collin Sieffert came in fourth in a season-best 52.30 seconds.

Other top finishes on the track included Ben Psicihulis finishing as men's 400m runner-up in 47.29 seconds and Janielle Josephs placing third in the women's 400m (55.79) and fourth in the women's 200m (24.36). Jayla Campbell also earned a fifth-place finish in the 400m (56.37). Molly Roach (2:08.19), Erin Reidy (2:08.36), and Sophie Schmitz (2:09.95) all clocked PRs in the women's 800m, finishing fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively, as well. 

In the field events, Allison Gerads finished fifth in the women's long jump invite with a mark of 5.98m (19-07.50) while Hannah Morris jumped 5.85m (19-02.50) for third in the open section. Lexy Berger finished fourth in the women's pole vault invite by clearing 3.91m (12-10.00), and Samantha Spencer cleared 3.61m (11-10.00) to come in sixth in the open section.

Day two of competition at the Fighting Illini B1G Relays begins with men's hammer throw at 9 a.m. CT Saturday. Running events are scheduled to begin with the women's 10,000m at 12:30 p.m. CT Saturday.
