Minnesota carded 13 birdies, sits in 11th place

The University of Minnesota women's golf team finished its first day of competition at The Big Ten Championships at the TPC River's Bend course today in Maineville, Ohio. The Gophers shot 305 (+17) as a team and are in 11th place. The Arnold Palmer-designed course, which is about 30 miles northeast of Cincinnati, is playing as a par 72 and spans 6,300 yards.

Sophomore Annabelle Ackroyd led the Gophers through the first 18 holes of the competition. The Calgary native finished day one with a score of three-over 75 and is in 32nd place. Ackroyd was dialed in on the front nine, where she notched six pars and one birdie. On the back nine, she earned two more birdies and three pars. The 75 was Ackroyd's seventh-best score of the season and came on a sunny, but brisk, 55-degree day.

Senior Grace Kellar, who is from Edina, Minn., also had a strong performance as she carded a four-over 76 and sits in 43rd place. She played particularly well early in the day and was even after nine. Kellar had birdies on holes 3, 6, 11, and 15, as she recorded her sixth-best score of the season.

Sophomore Grace Curran, tied Kellar with a 76 and is also in 43rd place. Curran made the turn at five-over 41, but then fired a 1-under 35 coming home. She notched three birdies and two bogeys on the back nine and was the lone Gopher to score under par for nine holes on the day.

Emma Carpenter, Joanne Free, and Jessica Lee rounded out the Minnesota lineup, all with sub-80 scores. Carpenter carded a 78, while Free and Lee each shot 79.

The Gophers are 19 shots behind tournament leader Michigan State (2-under 286) and six shots behind tenth place Illinois (11-over 299).

Day two of the three day, 54-hole tournament will kick off tomorrow morning.

Quotable:
"On courses of this caliber, we can't make mental mistakes like we did today," said Minnesota first-year head coach Rhyll Brinsmead. "We collectively had some really impressive shot making, but the mistakes we made were costly. I'm proud of the way the team grinded when our backs were against the wall, and that's the momentum we will carry into tomorrow."

Noteworthy:
Minnesota carded 13 birdies in round one, which tied with Penn State, Wisconsin and Rutgers for the second most on the day. Purdue, Iowa, Michigan State and Illinois all notched 14 birdies. The Gophers also shot 3-under par on the par 5s in the first round.
