Minnesota completes play at conference tournament on Sunday
The University of Minnesota women's golf team shot 290 (+2) in a rainy second round of the Big Ten Championships at TPC River's Bend in Maineville, Ohio. Minnesota's 290 was the seventh-best score of the day and was a 15-stroke improvement from the first round to the second for the Gophers on the par 72 Arnold Palmer-designed course. Minnesota (+19, 595) is now in tenth place after 36 holes.
The 290 was Minnesota's lowest score of the season and its lowest since it shot a 288 on Sept. 10, 2019, in the second round of the Minnesota Invitational. It was also Minnesota's lowest score in the Big Ten Championships since April 23, 2016, when the Gophers carded a 287 in the second round at The Fort Golf Course in Indianapolis, Ind.
Senior Joanne Free led Minnesota on Saturday, as she carded a one under 71. The 71 was a season-low score for the Scotland native.
Minnesota started the second round on the back nine. Free carded two birdies and seven pars to make the turn at two-under par 34. She birdied her fourth and ninth holes on the day. Coming home, Free gave a shot back on her tenth hole and then finished with eight straight pars to post her 71, which was an eight-stroke improvement from the first round.
Sophomore Grace Curran was right behind Free with an even-par 72. Curran birdied her first two holes and had a team-high four birdies on the day. She shot 37-35 after a 76 yesterday. Curran is four-over par for the event and her 148 leads Minnesota, as she is tied for 28th. Her 72 today tied her season low for the season as she also notched a 72 at the Florida State Match Up.
Grace Kellar, one of Minnesota's four seniors, finished day two with a one-over 73. Kellar made the turn at 37 and then traded two birdies with two bogeys on the back nine to shoot par. She was one of three Gophers to finish even or under on the front nine, which was Minnesota's back nine on the day.
Emma Carpenter, Annabelle Ackroyd, and Jessica Lee also contributed to the Minnesota lineup. Carpenter was two-over through eight and then birdied nine before recording par on her final nine holes to finish with a 74. Ackroyd carded a 76 and Lee recorded an 80.
Michigan State and Maryland are tied for the lead at 9-under 567 through 36 holes. The Gophers are 28 shots behind the Spartans and Terrapins, but sit only nine shots behind sixth-place Purdue (+10, 586)
The final 18 holes will be played on Sunday to conclude the three-day, 54-hole championship.
Quotable:
"Not only did we execute today, we did so with amazing attitudes and grit," said head coach Rhyll Brinsmead. "To shoot 290 in these conditions on this course is testament to the perseverance and talent on this team. I'm so proud of the way we responded. This group is tough as nails and always finds a way to get it done. We're excited to get back out there tomorrow and have another great day!"
Noteworthy:
The Gophers have the fourth-most pars in the tournament with 115 after 36 holes … Grace Curran is -4 on par 5s after 36 holes, which is the second-best mark in the event.
