Gophers Split Doubleheader with Purdue

4/3/2021 5:01:00 PM | Softball

Minnesota wins Game 1, but then sees its 21-game winning streak against the Boilermakers come to end in Game 2

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota softball team split a doubleheader with the Purdue Boilermakers on a 70-degree Saturday afternoon at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.

Minnesota (14-5) won the first game of the day 5-4 on a sun-splashed field before dropping the second 2-0 to Purdue (6-13).

With the win in Game 1, Minnesota pushed its win streak against Purdue to 21 games. That streak was snapped when Purdue took Game 2. Prior to today, the last time Purdue beat Minnesota was on May 2, 2014, when it won 3-0 in West Lafayette, Ind.

The second game also marked Minnesota's first home loss since May 3, 2019, when it fell 1-0 to Northwestern. Since then, the Gophers had won nine straight at home, which included five straight NCAA Tournament games to advance to the 2019 Women's College World Series.

Game 1: Minnesota 5, Purdue 4
Minnesota's Autumn Pease got the nod in the circle and allowed four runs (three earned) in a complete game, while striking out six to improve to 7-1 on the season. Natalie DenHartog led the Gophers on offense, notching two hits, driving in two and scoring two runs. All five of Minnesota's runs came with two outs.

Pease allowed one run in the first on two hits and then shut the Boilermakers down, permitting just one hit in the next four innings.

Minnesota wasted no time retaking the lead, as the Gophers plated four in the bottom half of the first inning against Sydney Bates.

Emily Hansen drew a two-out walk and then scored when DenHartog doubled to left center. Sara Kinch walked and then Sydney Strelow followed with a double to score DenHartog and advance Kinch to third. Ali Lindner then walked to load the bases and Rylie Costa picked up an RBI with a bases-loaded walk to put Minnesota up 3-1.

Purdue replaced Bates with Alex Echazarreta, but the Gophers would add a fourth run on a MacKenzie Denson single through the left side to score Strelow.

DenHartog made it 5-1 with a solo home run – her fifth of the season – to right-center in the fourth inning. Pease allowed a two-run homer in the fifth and a solo shot in the sixth, but Minnesota held on for its 14th win of the season.

Game 2: Purdue 2, Minnesota 0
Purdue's Savanah Henley silenced Minnesota's potent bats as she stuck out 13 Gophers in a complete game shutout. This was only the second time that Minnesota has been shutout this season. Minnesota's lone hit was a two-out single by Emily Hansen in the first inning.

Amber Fiser, who won Friday's game against the Boilermakers, was back in the circle for Minnesota. Purdue scored twice in the first inning and then Fiser shut the door allowing only two more hits for the game. Fiser pitched 7.0 innings and struck out seven as she fell to 6-4 on the season.

Up Next:
The Gophers take the road for a four-game series at Northwestern from April 9-11. Minnesota's next home series is April 16-18 when the Gophers welcome Nebraska to Gold Country for four games.
