MINNEAPOLIS - Four-time NCAA Champion and HONDA Sport Award winner Sarah Bacon has once again given us a reminder of how truly talented she is, after clinching TeamUSA's Olympic quota spot in the three-meter synchronized springboard event at the FINA Diving World Cup early Saturday morning. Alongside Bacon on the boards was her longtime synchro partner Kassidy Cook, a 2016 Olympian and five-time All-American diver from Stanford.
Bacon and Cook, or #CookNBacon, were sizzling throughout the entirety of the first day of competition at the World Cup, finishing fifth in both the preliminary (273.24) and finals (278.49) rounds of their 3m synchro event to earn the spot for TeamUSA.
"This year has brought nothing but adversity for Kassidy and me," said Bacon, "It all started with the postponement of the Olympic Games and then of World Cup. We get to World Cup, and more adversity hits when Kassidy is dealing with a shoulder injury and cannot do dives to her head. We kept good spirits through it all and really just tried to lift each other up and keep smiling the whole way. Once we knew we secured the Olympic Quota spot a flood of emotions came from the both of us. I'm just so proud of Kassidy for pushing through and continuing to fight through the pain and stand by my side in order to secure that quota spot."
The spot-clinching performance only marks the first of Bacon's events of the World Cup, as she will compete in the individual three-meter springboard event later in the week. The preliminary rounds for the individual event will kick off Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. CT, while the finals session will follow shortly thereafter, beginning at 2:45 a.m. CT.
To follow along, the preliminary and semi-final rounds of the individual event will be streamed through FINA's website and YouTube Channel (a link to which can be found above), while the Finals for all events will be split between NBC Sports Network and the Olympic Channel.
Though the spot now belongs to TeamUSA, it does not yet belong to Bacon & Cook, as they will still need to compete at the 2021 Olympic Diving Trials to clinch the spot for themselves. The trials, which span over the course of a week, will begin on June 6, 2021 at the Indiana University Natatorium and is where Bacon and Cook now have their eyes set. If the duo manages to qualify in the event at the trials, they will officially claim their spot as a member of TeamUSA for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
As for the swimming side of things, the Olympic Swimming Trials will take place over the course of two events. Those two events, Wave I & II, will take place on June 4-7 and June 13-20, respectively, with the latter acting as the primary meet.
