MINNEAPOLIS – Making his second career appearance at the NCAA Regionals, Gophers senior Angus Flanagan is tied for 33rd place following Monday's opening round in Noblesville, Ind.
Taking place at The Sagamore Club, which is playing as a par-72 at 7,173 yards, Flanagan shot a 2-over-par 74 to finish Monday tied with seven other golfers.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those five qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 28 to June 2.
The day initially began with a one-hour delay due to rain, which continued throughout the day. The intensity ranged from light to moderate, but it was a steady rainfall throughout the day.
Texas' Travis Vick leads all individuals after posting a 4-under 68, while the Longhorns are atop the leaderboard at 6-under with a 282. After round one, the low individuals not among the top five teams were UNCW's Blake McShea and Purdue's Joe Weiler, who both opened with a 2-under 70, four strokes better than Flanagan.
Flanagan began his day with a bogey on the opening hole, but quickly got that stroke back with a birdie on the par-5 second hole. Two holes later, he posted a double-bogey on the par-3 fourth, falling to 2-over. He then posted pars on four of the final five holes of the front nine, with the other being a birdie on No. 8.
Making the turn at 1-over, the Woking, England, native got back to even-par with a birdie on No. 10, his second in a three-hole span. He fell back into the black with a bogey on No. 12, however, then ended his round with his third bogey of the day at No. 18 after five straight pars between holes 13-17.
For Tuesday's second round, Flanagan will tee off on No. 1 beginning at 9:12 a.m. CT.
