MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota senior Angus Flanagan has slipped down the leaderboard on day two of the NCAA Regional at The Sagamore Club (7,173 yards, par 72) in Noblesville, Ind.
After finishing round one in a tie for 33rd after posting a 2-over-par 74, Flanagan shot a 1-over-par 73 Tuesday but dropped eight spots. He's now in a four-way tie for 41st with a 36-hole total of 147, three shots over par.
A bogey on No. 3 left Flanagan 1-over through five holes, but he posted consecutive birdies on the par-4 sixth hole and then par-5 seventh to get into the red. After a par on No. 8, he finished the front nine at even-par as a result of a bogey on No. 9.
Another birdie on No. 10 got Flanagan back to 1-under and he stayed there through the 15th hole. Unfortunately, he ran into trouble and bogeyed both No. 16 and No. 17, while a par on No. 18 closed out his second round.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those five qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 28 to June 2.
After round two, the low individual not among the top five teams is UNCW's Blake McShea, who is tied for the tournament lead at six-under (138), nine strokes better than Flanagan. Including McShea, there are currently 18 golfers ahead of Flanagan for the individual qualifying spot.
McShea is tied with North Florida's Nick Infanti for the individual lead. On the team side, Texas has a seven-shot lead as the Longhorns are at 15-under par, distancing themselves in the team portion from Tennessee (-8), North Carolina (-7), Louisville (-6) and North Florida (-3). The next closest team to the top-five is UNCW at 6-over.
Wednesday's final round will have Flanagan tee off on the front nine at 8:42 a.m. CT.
