The Gophers host Purdue on Friday at 6:00 p.m. CT.
MINNEAPOLIS – The Gopher baseball program returned to action, playing its first game at Siebert Field in over a month as the Maroon & Gold fell to Purdue 9-3 on Thursday night in the first of four games scheduled for the weekend.
Noah DeLuga (0-2) got the ball to start for Minnesota (4-27) and took the loss. Josh Culliver, Danny Kapala and Bennett Theisen also saw action on the mound for the Maroon & Gold.
At the plate, the Gophers were paced by Zack Raabe, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run and an RBI. Easton Bertrand furnished a standout effort as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and also being hit by a pitch. Junior Chase Stanke also contributed for Minnesota with an RBI.
Minnesota got the scoring started early, notching two runs in the first inning. Brett Bateman led the inning off when he was hit by a pitch and then smartly moved around the bases for the night's first run, which was followed by Raabe's solo shot.
The Gophers were unable to hold the lead but got back on the board in the eighth trailing 9-2. Minnesota scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Stanke, which tightened the Boilermakers lead to 9-3. The Golden Gophers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
