Four ‘U’ Home Runs Not Enough in 12-5 Loss

All nine starters reached base safely for the Gophers on Friday night.
MINNEAPOLIS – The Gopher baseball program received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, but Minnesota fell to Purdue 12-5 on Friday night at Siebert Field.
Nolan Burchill (1-1) made his first start of the season and took the loss on the mound for Minnesota (4-28). Drake Davis was a bright spot out of the bullpen, throwing two shutout innings to close the game while allowing one hit, walking two and striking out three. J.P. Massey and Patrick Fredrickson also made relief appearances for the Maroon & Gold. Trent Johnson (3-5) earned the win for Purdue (13-24).
At the plate, the Golden Gophers were able to hit four home runs over the course of the contest that accounted for all five runs on Friday night. Drew Stahl led the Gophers with a 2-for-4 performance and a pair of RBIs while Ronald Sweeny, Jack Wassel and Chase Stanke each hit solo home runs.
Down by a trio of runs after the top of the first, Minnesota hit a solo home run for the second-straight game as Wassel sent the ball out of the yard before Sweeny closed the gap even more with a one-run bomb in the bottom of the second.
Purdue built their lead to 11-2 before the Minnesota offense got back to work in the fifth with Stahl's two-run homer to left.
The Boilermakers expanded their lead to 12-4 before the Minnesota offense got back in gear, biting into that lead in the eighth. The Golden Gophers added a run on Stanke's one-out solo home, bringing the score to 12-5 in favor of Purdue.
The Golden Gophers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
