Wassel Collects Three Hits as Gophers Fall

Minnesota and Purdue conclude this weekend's series on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
MINNEAPOLIS – Jack Wassel strung together three hits, but the Minnesota Golden Gophers fell to the Purdue Boilermakers 17-4 on Saturday afternoon at Siebert Field.
Jack Liffrig (1-4) started and took the loss on the mound for Minnesota (4-29) while Ryan Duffy, Drew Hmielewski, Bennett Theisen and Bubba Horton also pitched for the Maroon & Gold. Cory Brooks (3-3) earned the win for Purdue (14-24).
Wassel's three-hit day led the Golden Gophers offensively while Andrew Wilhite put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk and an RBI.
After the Boilermakers built a 10-run lead, the Golden Gophers first put runs on the board in the sixth inning with a pair of runs in the inning, including one on a solo shot from Wilhite. Purdue expanded its lead to 14-2 before the Golden Gophers offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the eighth. Wilhite came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota, which brought the score to 14-3 in favor of the Boilermakers.
Purdue built its lead to 17-3 before the Minnesota offense got back to work, reducing that lead to 17-4 in the ninth.
