Gophers Women Open NCAA West Prelim

Amira Young, Anastasia Korzenowski, and Abigail Schaaffe led Minnesota on Thursday.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Amira YoungAnastasia Korzenowski, and Abigail Schaaffe advanced to Saturday's quarterfinal heats in their respective events on the track to lead the Golden Gopher track & field team at the NCAA West Preliminary in College Station, Texas, on Thursday.

Young improved on her own Minnesota program record with a career-best time of 11.30 seconds to advance in the 100 meters while Korzenowski ran 2:06.43 to finish second in her heat of the 800 meters and automatically advance to Saturday's quarterfinal heats. Schaaffe ran the third-best time in the 400-meter hurdles at 57.75 seconds to move on to Saturday's quarterfinal as well.

Other performances on the track saw Janielle Josephs run a career-best time of 54.00 seconds in the 400 meters, improving on her seventh-ranked time in Minnesota history and finishing 29th at the meet. Val Larson finished 28th in the 400-meter hurdles in 59.75, and Young added a 31st-place finish in the 200 meters to her showing in the 100 meters. Erin Reidy joined Korzenowski in the 800 meters, finishing 43rd in 2:11.34.

Allison Gerads and Tess Keyzers were the Gophers' top finishers in Thursday's field events. Gerads finished 14th in women's long jump with her second-best jump of the season at 6.35m (20-10.00 ft.), and Keyzers placed 15th in women's shot put at 16.34m (53-07.50 ft.).

Hailey Poole placed 21st in javelin, Lexy Berger tied for 26th in pole vault, and Devia Brown finished 25th in shot put to round out Thursday's field event action for the Maroon & Gold. The women's hammer throw competition was not completed and will conclude on Friday morning.

Action at the NCAA West Prelim continues through Saturday. The men's competition concludes on Friday while the women's competition concludes on Saturday in College Station, Texas.
