MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota senior Angus Flanagan is set to represent Great Britain and Ireland this weekend as he takes part in the 48th Walker Cup.

The competition takes place every two years and pits amateurs from the United States against those from Great Britain and Ireland. This weekend, it will be held at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Fla.

According to the Walker Cup website, each of the two competition days features foursomes (alternate-shot) matches in the morning followed by singles matches in the afternoon. On Saturday, there are eight singles matches, while all 10 players from each side compete in singles on Sunday.

One full point is awarded for each victory, while a half-point is earned for matches that are all square after 18 holes. As the two-time defending champion, the United States needs 13 points to retain the Cup while GB&I needs 13.5 points to capture it.

The streaming service Peacock will have coverage both days from 10-11 a.m. and 4:30-5:30 p.m., while Golf Channel will televise events from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on both days.

A native of Woking, England, Flanagan was a two-time medalist this season for the Golden Gophers, winning the Boilermaker Invitational and Git R Done Husker Invitational in back-to-back tournaments. He became the first Gopher to win consecutive tournaments since 2014. As a result, Flanagan also was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week after both performances.

In six stroke play tournaments this spring, Flanagan led the team in scoring average (72.06), birdies (62), percentage of scores counted (1.000), rounds under par (8) and tournaments leading the team (5). He has the three lowest rounds on the team this year by stroke and the three lowest 54-hole scores by stroke. Flanagan also owns the team's top four rounds to par and the top two 54-hole scores to par.

For his performances, he was named First Team All-Big Ten and was selected as an individual to compete in the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships. He earned the No. 2 seed at the Noblesville Regional in Noblesville, Ind., which will take place May 17-19.
