Alumni Advance at U.S. Olympic Trials

Gopher alumni Heather (Dorniden) Kampf and Shane Streich advanced to the semifinals in their respective events on Friday night.
EUGENE, Ore. -- University of Minnesota alumni Heather (Dorniden) Kampf and Shane Streich both advanced to the semifinal rounds in their respective events as competition began at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track & Field on Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Kampf clocked a time of 4:13.76 in the first round heats of the women's 1,500 meters, placing seventh in her heat and advancing with the 20th-fastest time in the preliminaries. Kampf will race in the 1,500-meter semifinals at 8:40 p.m. CT Saturday.
Fellow Minnesota alum Shane Streich, who graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2020 and spent the 2020-21 season attending graduate school and competing for Lipscomb University, finished third in his first-round heat of the men's 800 meters to automatically move on to the semifinal round. With a time of 1:48.49, Streich was 12th overall in the first round. The 800-meter semifinals are scheduled for 9:04 p.m. CT Saturday.
Sean Donnelly was also in action on day one of the competition, competing in the qualifying round of men's hammer throw but did not record a mark as he fouled all three of his attempts.
Current Gophers Alec Basten and Abby Kohut-Jackson join seven Minnesota alumni among the athletes competing at the U.S. Olympic Trials, which continue through Sunday, June 27.
