University of Minnesota women's gymnastics senior Hannah Willmarth has announced she will be returning for an additional year of competition next season.

Willmarth is exercising her option under NCAA guidelines to compete in an extra season of competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Competing for a college athletics team is a once in a lifetime experience and I am so thankful that I've gotten to be a part of this Gopher gymnastics family for the past three years," Willmarth said. "This team is really something special and I'm so, so grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of it for one more year."

Willmarth, a bars specialist from Boulder, Colo., has amassed more than 320 career points as a member of the Gophers. She set a career-high 9.925 on bars at the 2021 Big Five Meet and was named  Second Team All-Big Ten. At the conclusion of her senior season, Willmarth was awarded Big Ten Sportsmanship honors, selected as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition. Prior to her time at Minnesota, Willmarth spent one season at the University of Washington.

"We are thrilled that Hannah made the decision to return for next season," head coach Jenny Hansen said. "She was absolutely incredible for us this past year both on the competition floor and in the classroom. She is one of the hardest working student-athletes we have ever had in our program and a fabulous teammate as well."
