MINNEAPOLIS – Kion Benjamin, who won a Big Ten title and set two outdoor school records for the Gophers this year, has been named to the Trinidad & Tobago Olympic Team ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games and will represent his home country as a member of the 4x100 meter relay team.

The Trinidad & Tobago Olympic Committee announced the team on Saturday night via the organization's social media channels.

A native of Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, Benjamin recently concluded his sophomore season with the Maroon & Gold and won the 2021 Big Ten title in the outdoor 100 meters. During the outdoor season, the First Team All-Big Ten selection set new school records in the 100 meters (10.25) and the 200 meters (20.62). He also was part of an outdoor 4x100 meter relay team that ranks third in program history (40.04) and individually posted the fifth-best time among Gophers in the indoor 60-meter dash (6.725) during the 2021 season. His indoor personal record in the 200 meters (21.54) ranks eighth all-time at Minnesota and was posted in 2020.

Benjamin is also slated to compete for Trinidad & Tobago at the 2021 NACAC U23 Athletics Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica later this month (July 9-11).
