Gophers Secure Second Straight Shutout

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota (1-0-1, 0-0-0 B1G) secured its second shutout in as many matches on Sunday afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium with a 0-0 draw against the University of Illinois - Chicago. Megan Plaschko, along with the Gophers back line, allowed just four shots with only one on frame to secure the clean sheet.
"Sunday matches are arguably the hardest in college soccer," Chastain said. "We are disappointed in the result today, but there are still bright spots with our group. Defensively we were organized and we were tough. We generated some really nice chances in the run of play that hopefully now our next step will be capitalizing on those."
The back-to-back shutouts to start the season is the first time the Maroon and Gold have achieved that since 2017. Sunday's clean sheet is Plaschko's seventh of her career and that total comes in just 12 starts, with 10 of those coming in the shortened 2020-21 season.
After a slow start the Minnesota offense picked up the pace in the second half, firing off 11 shots in the second half. In total the Gophers outshot the Flames of UIC 21-4 with an advantage of 5-1 in shots on goal. Khyah Harper and Izzy Brown both were the individual leaders in regards to shots with four each while Makenzie Langdok, Sophia Boman and McKenna Buisman all added three shots each
"One of the biggest lessons we can take from today is that we had two really good chances early on," Chastain said. "One of those should be a goal for us, and then obviously it is a different game from there on. In some games, those might be the only chances you have. We have to recognize that we have to be ready to score in any moment."
Minnesota's next contest will occur on Aug. 26, on the road against Drake (0-1-1, 0-0-0 MVC). The Bulldogs are coming off a 2-0 loss against Creighton as well as a 0-0 draw with Kansas.
