Gophers Quiet Bulldogs in Des Moines

8/26/2021 5:13:00 PM | Soccer

DES MOINES, IOWA -  The University of Minnesota (2-0-1, 0-0-0 B1G) remained undefeated with a 1-0 victory over Drake on the road Thursday night. Delaney Stekr slotted home a penalty kick and helped keep the Bulldogs scoreless for the second win of the season.

"A win is a win," Minnesota head coach Erin Chastain said. "We are certainly going to build from here. I don't think it was our greatest performance, but I still think we generated a good amount of chances. Drake battled tonight, so credit to them. I'd like to see us be able to execute on some of our chances and I'd like to see us play a little bit more like we did in the second half tonight. We'll be looking forward to getting back to work in preparation for Mississippi State next week."

The penalty kick came to be after senior midfielder Megan Gray sent a dangerous cross into the box just five minutes into the match that struck a Bulldogs arm. Stekr, who is a captain for the Gophers, stepped up and buried her first goal of her career to put Minnesota in front early.

Just 10 minutes later the Gophers on the attack again with Patricia Ward sprinting down the field. In front of the Drake defense, a Bulldog's defender took Ward down from behind and drew a red card. Minnesota nearly punished Drake, but the Bulldog's goalkeeper kept the Maroon and Gold's lead at 1-0. For the remainder of the match Drake was forced to play one player down due to the red card.

Although the Gophers did not increase their lead, it was not for a lack of trying. The Gophers finished with 16 shots, but were still able to leave the state of Iowa with another 1-0 win. The win increases the Gopher's undefeated streak in the state of Iowa to 11, dating back to 2008. The last loss in the state of Iowa came against Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament Championship match.

It was another clean sheet performance for junior captain Megan Plaschko, who was forced to make just one save on the night. The Minnesota defense held the Bulldogs to just four shots in total, giving Plaschko her eighth shutout in 13 career starts.

Next on the schedule for the Gophers is Mississippi State (1-2-0, 0-0-0 SEC) who are coming off a 1-0 loss to Arizona State at home. The matchup is the first between the two programs.
