MINNEAPOLIS- The Gophers women's gymnastics team welcomes five incoming freshmen to the team for the 2021-22 season and it is time to get to know our newcomers!
Olivia Reed is a native of Durham, N.C. She competed for Bull City Gymnastics and graduated from Charles E. Jordan High School. Reed was the 2018 North Carolina All-Around Champion and a 2018 JO National Qualifier. She was the bars title winner at the 2019 Regional Championships. After competing at Level 10 for five years, her high score on bars is 9.7 and all-around is 37.925.
GopherSports: Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?
Olivia Reed: I loved the coaches and the program they've built as well as the atmosphere in the gym. I also really liked how the school was in such a big city where there would be plenty of opportunities after school.
GS: When did you start competing in gymnastics?
OR: I started competing in meets when I was seven years old. I fell in love with the sport because I liked having something I was good at. Another huge thing that made me love the sport was the people I've met through gymnastics.
GS: How do you plan on contributing to this program?
OR: Bars and beam are my strongest events, so I'd like to help out in any way I can there. I also want to be a good and trusted person for my teammates to lean on and to celebrate successes.
GS: What are you most excited about for your freshman season?
OR: As a freshman I'm really excited to travel and wear the maroon and gold. It's extremely exciting to be part of a Big 10 school in general. However, at Minnesota I feel that the connection with fans is so important and the atmosphere in the Pav is unlike any other. I'm also looking forward to living on a college campus and meeting new people.
GS: What is your favorite gymnastics memory?
OR: Honestly my favorite gymnastics memory is really recent. I'd say it was my regional meet this year in 2021. There were a lot of obstacles that our gym went through that year and I was hoping to end the season on a high note. I had a great meet and was so excited. It was also the last time our senior class would be traveling together for a meet so we got a beach house and stayed in Florida for a few more days after.
GS: What activities do you like outside of gymnastics?
OR: Outside of the gym I love hanging out with my friends. We often go to the pool, watch movies or just sit around and talk. One of my favorite things whether it be online or in person is to shop. One of my family's favorite things to do when I'm not in the gym is travel. We usually go on a trip in the summer and it's a good time where we're all together.
GS: What are you majoring in and why did you choose that field?
OR: I'm currently undecided, but think I'd like to focus on business. With 18 Fortune 500 companies located in the Twin Cities, there are lots of opportunities. Also as I mentioned earlier I have an appreciation for traveling and would love the chance to possibly study and work internationally.
Quick Hits:
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?: Time control
Dogs or cats: Dogs
Favorite book: The Deadly Sister
Dream car: G Wagon
Most binge worthy TV show: Desperate Housewives
