MINNEAPOLIS - Antoine Sale is the leader for Minnesota through the first day of competition at the Gopher Invitational on Sunday at the Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn. As a team, Minnesota is in sixth place after shooting 2-under par in the second round.

"We didn't start off the way we wanted to in the morning, as the wind was whipping around and it was chilly," head coach Justin Smith said. "It was a good test right out the gate, but our guys battled hard to salvage a reasonable round in the morning, though we got further behind the lead than we intended to. In the afternoon, we got off to a good start and the weather was beautiful. The pins were difficult, the course was getting bouncy and the greens were firm, but we only had seven bogeys across the lineup in the second round. Matt [Rachey] and I preach consistency to the team everyday, and they exuded that in the second round. They put us back in the position to finish off in a great place at our great home event."

Sale sits 4-under par through 36 holes, shooting a 4-under 67 in the first round and keeping pace shooting an even-par 71 in the second. The 67 is the lowest by a Gopher this year, while his score to par of 4-under is the lowest this year on the team. Sale trails the leaders,  Bradley Smithson of Michigan State and Luke Kluver of Kansas (-5) by just one stroke.

Senior Lincoln Johnson and junior Harrison Arnold are both tied for 31st at 1-under par after dueling rounds of 144. Johnson was 3-over par at the end of the first round after a trio of bogeys. He battled back in the second round, recording three birdies to two bogeys to go 1-under on the day. After starting his day with a double bogey, round one saw Arnold card four bogeys to three birdies. His strong afternoon showing in round two of three birdies brought him to a tie with Johnson at 1-under.

Freshman Eduardo Galdos found difficulty in strong winds to start the day in round one, carding three double bogeys and two bogeys. He birdied on No. 16 of his first round to start building back momentum. He finished strong, however, shooting even par in round two. A 7-over score of 149 puts him in a tie for 51st as play ended Sunday.

Junior Connor Glynn rounds out the Gophers lineup and is tied for 72nd with a 13-over 155.

In addition to the five Gophers competing in the lineup, Minnesota also has five individuals in the field at Windsong Farm in Will Grevlos, Ben Warian, Harry Plowman-Ollington, Bennett Swavely and Alex Eickhoff.

"The individuals had a really good day today," assistant coach Matt Rachey said. "In the end, they all finished within three shots of each other. It was very competitive and they all had very solid rounds in the afternoon. We are happy with the performance of some of the younger guys competing as individuals and we look forward to a good final round starting tomorrow."

Grevlos is currently the top individual competitor at 3-over par on the day. He began the day at 2-over after his first round of play, with four bogeys and two birdies, and shot 1-under during round two. Back-to-back birdies on No. 1 and 2 in the second round highlighted his day.

Sophomore Ben Warian is in a tie for 40th after shooting 4-over through 36 holes. He was 2-over with four bogeys and two birdies in both rounds.

Plowman-Ollington and Swavely came in at a tie for 43rd at 5-over. Plowman-Ollington bogied on No. 1 and double bogied on No. 10 before a birdie on No. 12. A pair of bogeys later in the round put him at 4-over after 18 holes. In the second round, he shot an even-par back nine and 1-over front.

Swavely, coming off a strong showing at the Washington County Invitational last week, also went 4-over in the first round and 1-over in the second. His five birdies lead all individual competitors.

Eickoff ended at 6-over in a tie for 47th. The sophomore shot a 6-over 77 in the first 18 but returned for a strong second round at even par.

Round three of the Gopher Invitational will commence on Monday morning, with the first tee time coming at 7:15 a.m. Minnesota will begin at 8:05 a.m. with Glynn, followed by Galdos, Johnson, Arnold and Sale in 10-minute intervals.

The Minnesota individuals will tee off at 8:30 a.m. with Eickhoff followed by Plowman-Ollington, Swavely, Warian and Grevlos.
