Minnesota Begins Season at ANNIKA Intercollegiate Presented by 3M

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's golf team opened its 2021-22 campaign at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate Presented by 3M at The Royal Club in Lake Elmo, Minn. on Monday.
The Gophers are in 12th (+17, 305) after the first 18 holes of competition. South Carolina (-10, 278) currently holds the top spot on the team leaderboard and is followed by Duke (-3, 285) and Wake Forest (-2, 286).
"It was great to be back out on the golf course today starting our fall season," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "Obviously our team placement is not what we had hoped for after round one but I am really pleased with many of the positives I saw today. Geraldine [Wong] had a solid round and found herself well placed individually. We talked about sharpening up our course management and handling our emotions better tomorrow. I'm confident headed into round two."
Geraldine Wong is the top Gopher individually after the first round and is tied for 25th after shooting 1-over par. Wong began the day with a birdie on the par-4 first hole and also birdied on the par-4 15th hole.
Joanne Free tied for 43rd with a 4-over par 76 on the day. After a 3-over front nine, Free recorded three birdies on the back nine to sit at 4-over after 18 holes complete.
Junior Emma Carpenter's day was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole. With seven bogeys, she sits in a tie for 47th at 5-over.
Tied for 55th is Grace Curran after she carded a 79 for round one, making a birdie on hole six and 18. She registered a trio of bogeys and three double bogeys to finish 7-over par.
Rounding out the Gophers lineup was Leah Harzog at a 9-over tie for 58th.
Minnesota is back in action on Tuesday morning for round two of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate Presented by 3M at The Royal Club in Lake Elmo, Minn. Herzog will tee off at 8:05 a.m. CT from the 10th hole and will be followed by Curran, Carpenter, Free and Wong.
