MINNEAPOLIS - Joanne Free is the top Gopher after two rounds of competition at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate Presented by 3M at The Royal Club in Lake Elmo, Minn. As a team, Minnesota sits in 12th place (305-297--602).
"We're really pleased with today's overall play," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "We showed we can compete in this field today and I am really proud of this team. Joanne [Free] was exceptional shooting 70 in tough windy conditions. We took the emotion and reactions out today, and just played golf. Shooting a lower team score than a fourth of the field is a win. Our goal is to find wins every day."
As the team's top golfer from round two, Free sits in a tie for 20th at 2-over (76-70--146) for the tournament. Tuesday, Free made the turn at 1-under and stayed consistent with a 1-under back nine as well. Her five birdies were the most for the Maroon and Gold in the round.
Geraldine Wong carded a 4-over 76 on Tuesday to go 5-over in the tournament (73-76--149) and tie for 38th. Wong went 2-over on both the front and back nines.
A trio of Gopher juniors in Emma Carpenter, Grace Curran and Leah Herzog followed.
Carpenter went 2-over on the day and is tied for 45th (77-74--151) after 36 holes. She found trouble early with a double bogey early on hole two, but came back to shoot a 1-under back nine after her second eagle in as many days.
Curran is in 57th place at 13-over par (79-78--157). Today, she went 3-over on both the front and back nines with three bogeys in each.
Herzog rounds out the lineup one stroke behind Curran in a tie for 58th (81-77--158). She finished the day on a positive note with birdies on the 16th and 18th holes.
Minnesota will close out the ANNIKA Intercollegiate Presented by 3M on Wednesday morning with Herzog teeing off at 8:05 a.m. CT followed by Curran, Carpenter, Wong and Free.
