Gophers Finish ANNIKA Intercollegiate

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's golf team closed out the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in 12th place (305-297-30--902) at the Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo, Minn.Ā
"The experience we gained this week will be invaluable as the season progresses," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "We proved we can compete with the 11 best ranked teams in the nation. We also learned that to take the next step we need to clean up some areas of our games and mental focus. I'm super proud of the way the team handled themselves this week. We not only have talented athletes, we have all around good people representing our program."Ā
Geraldine Wong was the top finisher for Minnesota. She carded a 1-under final round to move up 10 spots and end in a tie for 28th with a 4-over 220 (73-76-71).Ā
Next after Wong was Joanne Free in a tie for 37th. Free's third round saw a 5-over 77 to go 7-over par (76-70-77--223) in the tournament.Ā
Junior Emma Carpenter placed 55th in the competition at 16-over par (77-74-81--232). Her two eagles, one in both the first and second round, led the field.Ā
Grace Curran posted her best round of the tournament in today's final round, shooting a 4-over 76. The junior ended the event in a tie for 56th (79-78-76--233).Ā
Rounding out the Gophers lineup is junior Leah Herzog in 57th place (81-77-76--234). Finishing one stroke behind Curran, Herzog also carded her best round of the tournament on Wednesday with a 76.Ā
South Carolina took home the team championship in dominating fashion. The Gamecocks finished the 54-hole event at 14-under par, with Duke finishing second, seven shots back (-7) and Wake Forest in third at 5-under. Individually, Julia Johnson of Ole Miss claimed the title after shooting a 12-under 204 (67-67-70).Ā
Minnesota's next competition comes at the Golfweek Challenge in Vail, Colorado on Sept. 27-29.Ā Ā
