Gophers Continue 2021-22 Campaign at St. Olaf Invitational

9/18/2021 12:15:00 PM | Men's Cross Country, Men's Track & Field, Women's Cross Country, Women's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Gophers continued on their 2021-22 season this morning as they took on the St. Olaf Invitational in Northfield, Minn., with the women securing a fifth place team finish overall (115) while the men competed only individually.

"This meet was a great learning experience for everybody," said head coach Sarah Hopkins. "A lot of our women had never run a 6k before, and none of our guys had ever run an 8k before, so it was a really good chance for them all to learn."

Though he ran unattached, the best Gopher men's finish of the day belonged to freshman Emmet Anderson, who claimed third with a time of 25.39.01 in his collegiate debut. The Staples, Minn. native joined the Gophers earlier this fall, and will be taking a redshirt season in 2021-22. Following Anderson, Dillon Blake and Shuayb Hussein finished 109th (28:15.33) and DNF, respectively.

"I thought Emmet was awesome," said Hopkins. "That was one of the best 8k debuts I've ever seen, he absolutely killed it. For a high school kid who has never ran an 8k before, that was impressive and pretty cool to watch."

Sophomore Ava Hill led the way for the women with an eighth place finish in the six-kilometer, posting a final time of 23:23.80. Redshirt-junior Taylor Krone (23.42.04), redshirt-senior Molly Roach (23.44.20) and redshirt-sophomore Marta Kogucki (23.52.31) all placed within the top-30 spots as well, finishing 21st, 24th and 27th respectively. The team's fifth-best finisher of the day was sophomore Ceci Howes, who finished 43rd with a time of 24:16.39, and redshirt-sophomores Ananya Vegesna (24:34.97) and Sydney Kretlow (24:37.07) rounded out the scoring for the Gophers with 52nd and 54th place finishes, respectively.

"I though Ava Hill ran great, she did a really good job being in the top ten. It seemed like a lot of our women just made a sort of tactical error starting out pretty hard, but I'm never going to fault that. It's better to learn here than at some of our bigger events like the Griak next weekend."

NOTABLE

Minnesota native Emmet Anderson claimed an impressive third place finish in his first ever collegiate event, registering a final time of 25:39.01 in the eight-kilometer race. Though the four-time MSHSL cross country all-state honoree ran unattached due to him taking a redshirt year over the 2021-22 season, the finish bodes well for his future with the Maroon and Gold.

Eight Gophers made their first career cross country appearances at a collegiate event Saturday morning, those being Emmet Anderson (UA), Dillon Blake, Ava Hill, Ceci Howes, Shuayb Hussein, Marta Kogucki, Carley Kremer and Sydney Kretlow. For Blake, Hussein, and Kremer, Saturday's meet marked their official collegiate debuts.
