Minnesota scored all four runs in the eighth inning to win
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers baseball team defeated St. Thomas, 4-1, in an exhibition on Friday night at Siebert Field. The Gophers trailed 1-0 through seven and a half innings before tacking on four eighth inning runs to secure the victory.
Andrew Wilhite led the Gophers with a 2-for-4 outing at the plate, which included the game-tying home run in the eighth inning. Ronnie Sweeny blasted a two-run game-winning double to give his team its first lead of the game before a Cody Kelly triple sealed the deal. Seven Minnesota pitchers combined to strikeout 16 and walk just one Tommie in 9.0 innings of work. Iowa transfer Will Semb came in to close in the ninth inning and struck out two UST hitters to end the game.
St. Thomas scored their lone run in the top of the second inning after a pair of singles and an RBI groundout by Charlie Bartholomew started the scoring. UST's offense was held to just two hits on the night, with both being singles in the second inning.
Minnesota had nine hits from eight different batters but failed to string anything together until the eighth inning. Their best scoring chance prior to the eighth inning came in the bottom of the fifth when Wilhite tagged a ground rule double to left center. He then advanced to third base on a wild pitch but he was stranded there after a flyout to center field by the next hitter.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Wilhite stepped to the plate again and delivered once more. This time he started the scoring for the Gophers with a solo blast to right field. Easton Bertrand then worked a walk before advancing to third on a single from Drew Stahl. Batting cleanup, Sweeny came up and roped a double to right center, scoring both Bertrand and Stahl to give Minnesota its first lead. An RBI triple from Cody Kelly then provided the final insurance the 'U' needed to secure the victory.
De Pere, Wis., native Will Semb came in to close the game for Minnesota. He shut the Tommies down, 1-2-3, in the final inning, striking out two.
Sam Ireland started the game on the hill for the Gophers, striking out the side in his one inning of work. Seven Gophers pitchers combined to strikeout 16 hitters with just one walk in nine innings of work. Freshman Tucker Novotny struck out a game-high five batters in his two innings of work.
Newcomers Sam Malec, Aidan Maldonado, Richie Holetz and Will Semb also saw their first action in the maroon and gold. They combined to allow no runs and no hits while striking out seven and walking just one.
