Spartans Trip Up Gophers on the Road

9/26/2021 1:32:00 PM | Soccer

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota (5-2-3, 1-2-0 B1G) dropped a road match against Michigan State (7-1-2, 2-1-0 B1G) by a score of 2-1 at DeMartin Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Izzy Brown scored Minnesota's lone goal in the match with McKenna Buisman making the assist.

"Obviously we are disappointed with today's loss," head coach Erin Chastain said. "Proud that with 10 minutes left we tied it up. It was a great goal and executed really well. I think we over complicated some simple plays down the stretch especially. And then I think we kind of gifted them a goal on the gamewinner. That's disappointing but I still believe in our group and I think coming out of the weekend 1-1, we'll focus on that. We'll also focus on a really tough Rutgers team on Thursday and get back to work on the training field. It's a great group and this year they have typically had really good responses so we'll expect the same next week."

Michigan State scored the match's opening goal late in the first half of a penalty kick. The penalty kick goal is the first allowed by the Gophers this season.

Trailing for the second time in the weekend the Gophers once again responded. Brown notched her fifth goal of the season with 10 minutes remaining to even the match. Buisman sent a through ball into the box where Brown finished a first-time strike into the back of the net.

Michigan State responded four minutes later on a miscommunication on the Gophers defensive end. The Spartans raced to the end line before sending a cross in that Megan Plaschko nearly caught, but couldn't come down with the ball before a Michigan State attacker finished on the upper half of the net to take back the lead late.

The loss sends Minnesota back home with a 1-1-0 record on the five-day road trip that saw a 4-2 victory against Ohio State on Thursday. Minnesota returns home to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium for a pair of matches against Rutgers on Sept. 30, and Penn State on Oct. 3.
