MINNEAPOLIS – Bob Motzko has rounded out his coaching staff ahead of the 2021-22 season with Brennan Poderzay joining the Gopher men's hockey program as the team's volunteer goaltending coach.
"Brennan has a wonderful track record of developing elite goaltenders, and we're certainly excited to have him start working with our group," Motzko said. "His experience and expertise will be a huge benefit for our goaltenders and our team."Â
A native of Tower, Minn., Poderzay comes to the University of Minnesota after spending six seasons in the same role at Minnesota State. With the Mavericks, Poderzay coached Dryden McKay over the last three seasons as the three-time WCHA Goaltending Champion and two-time All-American was named a Hobey Baker Award Hat Trick finalist, a Mike Richter Award finalist and the WCHA Player of the Year in 2021. In his six-year tenure in Mankato, Minnesota State won five WCHA regular-season titles and advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four for the first time in program history last season.Â
"Growing up in Minnesota, every kid dreams of donning the big 'M' one way or the other, so it's a pleasure and an honor to join the staff at the University of Minnesota," Poderzay said. "I'm excited about the opportunity and the challenges ahead, and I'm looking forward to the season. I would also like to thank Mike Hastings and everyone at Minnesota State – I truly appreciated the opportunity to work with the Mavericks program."Â
Poderzay previously served as the Minnesota Regional Goalie Scout and as a mentor for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program.
Â
As a player, Poderzay spent three seasons at St. Scholastica before a six-year professional career. He earned a bachelor's degree in business management from St. Scholastica in 2013.Â
Minnesota opens its 101st season of competition on Saturday, Oct. 2 against Alaska at 3M Arena at Mariucci.Â
