No. 4 Minnesota looks to keep its 52-game winning streak over Minnesota State intact this weekend.

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 5 Golden Gopher women's hockey team takes on Minnesota State in a home-and-home series this weekend. Friday's contest is slated for 6:00 p.m. CST at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in Mankato, Minn. Saturday's game will be held at Ridder Arena at 4:00 p.m. CST.

Last Time Out: Gophers Sweep the Tommies
The Gophers (16-5-1) handled St. Thomas (4-15-1) in both games of the first-ever series between the programs. The 'U' had no shortage of scoring over the weekend - winning 8-0 on Saturday at Ridder Arena and 8-2 on Sunday at St. Thomas Ice Arena. Abigail Boreen stole the show for the Gophers as she scored five goals over the two-game series. Her four point performance on Sunday (3g-1a) was a single-game career high and included her first career hat-trick. Freshman goaltender Skylar Vetter stopped all 16 shots to earn her first career shutout and move her record to 4-2-0 on the season. Junior defender Madeline Wethington recorded a career-high five points (1g-4a) over the series while senior forward Taylor Heise turned in a six point (1g-5a) weekend. This series marked the first since 2009 in which the Gophers scored at least eight goals in both games of a single series.

Scouting Minnesota State
Minnesota State (9-10-1) has yet to play since ending its first half on Dec. 18 in Bemidji. The Mavericks closed out 2021 with a 4-1-1 record in their final three series. Minnesota State sits at 5-10-1 in the WCHA. The Mavericks are led in points by senior forward Brittyn Fleming (7g-17a), junior forward Kelsey King (10g-7a), and junior defender Charlotte Akervik (4g-11a). Junior goaltender Calla Frank is the defending HCA National Goaltender of the Month after posting a 0.99 goals against average and .959 save percentage in December. The Gophers carry a 52-game winning streak against the Mavericks into this weekend.

Scoring First
Through 22 games so far this season, Minnesota has got on the scoresheet first in all, but two games. The last time the Gophers were scored on first to open a contest was Oct. 22 at Colgate. The Maroon and Gold are 15-4-1 in games where they find the back of the net first and 1-1-0 in games in which the opponent scores first. Senior forward Taylor Heise leads the team with six opening goals this season, including two goals inside the opening 40 seconds.

WCHA Honors
Minnesota nearly swept the WCHA weekly awards following a slew of impressive individual performances over the weekend. Senior forward Abigail Boreen earned her second WCHA Forward of the Week this season following her dominant weekend. Freshman forward Peyton Hemp, who has two conference Rookie of the Month honors, earned her first Rookie of the Week honor after netting a goal in each game. Skylar Vetter was tabbed as the conference's Goaltender of the Week following her first career shutout.

Scoring Milestones on the Horizon
Senior Taylor Heise is Minnesota's active career scoring leader with 131 career points (53g-78a) in 117 career games. Redshirt senior Amy Potomak (42g-53a) is closing in on 100 career points. Fifth-year Emily Brown (18g-60a) and senior Emily Oden (25g-54a) are approaching 80 career points. Fifth-year Olivia Knowles (15g-52a) is nearing 70 career points. Senior Abigail Boreen (27g-32a) is one point shy of 60 career points.

25th Season
The 2021-22 season marks the 25th season of Gopher women's hockey. To celebrate the first quarter-century of Gopher women's hockey, Minnesota will wear special '25 seasons' patches on their jerseys among other celebrations throughout the season.

Quest for Eighth National Title Continues
Minnesota has won seven national championships (2000, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016) and looks for a historic eighth title national crown in 2021-22.
